IPhone JB4 App -
12-03-2011, 03:59 AM
Terry,
First off thanks a lot for the support and the awesome products, all my purchases will be with BMS.
Now for the real reason I'm posting, have you considered making a JB4 application for the Android or Iphone OS?
Do you think it would be possible to connect the Iphone USB connector to the BMS USB cable and log or adjust while texting ?
If you're not thinking of making an app would you consider others making it for the community (that means free app)?

I am looking into creating a jb4 Android app. I was waiting till I got a tablet to start messing with it. I know someone on here started doing an android app. He also tested with the iphone using a bluetooth adapter but found out iPhone only allows specific Bluetooth adapters on their product and that some of them were very pricey. Android is a lot easier to build apps on in my opinion biut if either platform came out with one it should be pretty easy to port it over to the other platform.

I started playing with an Android app last year, even posted a small clip on it here: http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11682 Then i became a father and all my spare time in front of the computer was history...
I'm planning to give it another try sometime this winter. The problem is not so much the software part, rather the hardware part of it. My new approach to the interface problem is to use wifi. Since last year a couple of quite cheap wifi components have become available. The ideal solution would be to find a simple hardware solution and write an open source implementation to support simple porting to different platforms.
I think Terry has changed the communication protocol since my last try, so I'll probably have to rewrite my old code.
Time will tell if I ever get anywhere with this project, we'll see. Maybe we should start a new thread in the subject and start collaborating?

Yeah we can get a few people together and code it in modules, that way it won’t take as long and it’s more scalable. I haven’t programmed anything for iphones or android, what language do you use?

I think a collaboration would be a good idea. I don't know a ton about Android so im sure a few of us working together could help fill in the knowledge gap and develop aich needed app.

Great,
I'm looking at Eclipse right now for Android using Java or C++. I think C++ might be a better option since that is what Iphone uses and would make that an easy port over.
Eclipse also has a "team synchronizing" feature that will allow us to work on modules together etc.
I'll play around with it some more, hopefully we can get a few people with specific skill like coding and development to help us out. Also we should probably start a new thread for this.

I created a simple VBA app communicating with the JB4 so can help with the comm protocol.
Was able to log all the values pretty good but not very useful as we already have the JB4 interface on windows.
PM me if you want the code.

I will spill the beans on my development once I've got time to finalise some bits and bobs over the xmas break.
I can help with the parsing, serial end and general questions I guess until then.
via pm.

this would make me so happy. my buddy has a B8 S4 and apparently there is iphone software (i believe still in beta and he's jailbroken) through which he can log, change maps/parameters for his tune (APR), read/clear codes etc. would definitely be useful.. props to everyone looking into it! we appreciate it!

I would think Android would be easier with its open-source nature. We could probably hit up some of the Android development sites (there are TONS) and ask some questions. Hell, might even find someone whos willing to work on it or at least let us know what exactly would be involved to make it work.
I wouldnt mind paying for the ability to log/tune/etc directly from my phone. Just a thought.

I'm using virtual box with my macbook air and it works fine, but it sucks to waste precious SSD space with a windows installation.
A iOS app for iPhone/iPad would be amazing, using bluethooth or even better wifi to connect to the JB4.
I love to pay for this app!!!

I'd love to write an Android app and Mac OS desktop app for this but I don't want to start from scratch and I doubt Terry wants to share his .net source code.
If we can get some community source code going around I'd love to spend some evenings coding on something fun like this. Whats a few more hours of programming weeknights anyway!
