Default B58 Laptop USB Failure - 03-21-2020, 09:27 AM

Hi all, I have a 2016 340i with a JB4 installed. I just got it and I'm a total noob at all of this. I've googled the crap out of everything. Installed the drivers and software. Updated my older Windowa 10 laptop. Using a USB 2.0 port. Device manager has port com 3, JB4 app matches the port. It will not connect. Always fails. Pushed the ingition switch twice as directed in the instructions but nothing. PC recognizes the device and says drivers are up to date. Not sure what else to do.

Thanks

Look for the JB4 bluetooth connection.... way better with the app.

I don't have the bluetooth adapter. I read someone used the USB with their phone but not sure how that works.

Go to device manager and find the COM port created from the USB device. Go to the advanced settings at set the latency to 1. This helps with D-CAN connections, may help with JB4 as well.

Are you using the proper BMS cable or did you buy a serial to USB cable?

Either need the BMS cable or a custom made one

Hi Guys,

I have bought almost new JB4 with the original BMS USB cable for my BMW M340i G20 from a friend of mine, who has used it in his M140i.

I have downloaded the necessary software and the latest firmware version, installed the usb driver, connected the box to the laptop, the system assigned the box COM port number 4.

Connected the box to the car via OBD2 with the diagnostic mode running and the USB cable to the laptop, launched the JB4 application, chose the port number 4 in settings, clicked the connect button, but an error instantly popped out: COM4 Failed. I have done many things, trying to solve the issue: changed the port speed in the driver settings, reassigned the port number, but it did not help at all.

Who faced this problem and how was it solved? Maybe it was necessary to connect the box to all sensors under the hood, but I don't believe in it, because what do they have to do with the firmware of the box itself?!

Could anyone help me? Thank you in advance.

I think the JB4 power comes from the sensor power wires so yeah, plug it all in.
Why haven’t you tried that when it’s the one thing you even suggest yourself that you haven’t done?

JB4 needs to be installed to connect to it.

My buddy told me that connecting the USB and the OBD2 would be enough...
Okay, thank you for the advice, I will give it a try and will report about the result later.
