Default To those of you running an aftermarket intercooler... - 06-20-2017, 08:04 PM

Looking for some advice from those of you that have upgraded your intercooler. Which brand did you go with and why?

I've found that even on just Map 2 and 93 octane fuel, I am heat soaking in the later sessions. I can see/feel the JB pulling boost and timing. I would like to be able to run E40 on Map7 for future track days, so I need a larger intercooler. On the street the OE one is fine for a few pulls but will heat soak shorty after.

I'm leaning towards the VRSF intercooler because of it's price. Anyone with any firsthand experience?

Since I went single turbo i bought the new vrsf 7.5 inch core race intercooler since it only has great reviews about it. But when I was stock turbo I had the Active autowerk 5 inch sport intercooler and that actually did the job fine.

Rev9 because it was cheap. It does the job, cost a fraction of the big names, fit perfectly, and is black, so it fits my sleeper.

I went with the VRSF 6' race core intercooler due to its great reviews. Also the biggest intercooler on the market for the f30 platform.

VRSF 5" stepped because it was cheap and fit 135i perfectly.

It does the job much better than stock and looks pretty good, as long as you don't mind the Chinese build quality and silver spraypaint finish.

VRSF 5" stepped because it was cheap and fit my 335i without any cutting.

That being said, I also run Meth and I love it. It does a fantastic job of bringing down IATs to ambient or less and it's on demand. I do a lot of highway driving and so at anytime the IC is hot and the IATs are hotter, so the IC no matter what size isn't helping much. If I were to do it again, I might skip the IC and just do Meth, unless I could be swayed differently.

I did just read a post though where one of the replies said the opposite, where they were saying not to mess with Meth and just get a bigger IC. No great arguments as to why though.

I would think that at the track (whatever type) once your IC was heat soaked, your only option is to wait for it to cool down before it becomes useful again. My 2 cents.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm still leaning towards the VRSF stepped intercooler based on their reviews and price point. I do obviously track the car, but I live in the northeast not the desert, so I'm betting the Race intercooler is a bit overkill.

CTS Turbo fmic because I joined a small GroupBuy that some forum members in F30 Bimmerpost started and was shipping was the fastest out of all other folks I spoke with who have other brand and better price too.

Plus seeing this http://badbread.com/new-intercooler/ and his logs, and other folks made me happy about my decision. I evaluated other brand/logs and decided anything over stock is an upgrade.

After alot of comparison research, I went with an "On 3 Performance" 7" racing intercooler. Out the door for <$400 and this thing is worth every penny. I will say, if you're afraid of a little core support reworking, better go with another one. To be able to fit one this size under there you're going to have to do a little cutting. Love it.

I actually just grabbed a used Phoenix/Burger intercooler for cheap off the classifieds. The install took all of 45min, but I won’t know if it’s enough to keep my temps down until it warms up. No sense running ethanol if you spin 2nd on snow tires with 93. Amirite?

My gut says it’s enough to keep me from heat soaking on the track with 93, but it’s a tall ask if I’m gonna run E40 on Map7.

VRSF 7 inch. I will eventually upgrade to the 7.5 inch.

Yes, you do have to cut a lot for these larger intercoolers. VRSF products are reasonably priced and get the job done.
