I probably would not run Map5 without an IC. Many have said its best not to. But FMIC are easy to install.. And if you get a VRSF one it is only $480, well worth it!

My VRSF 7" was a downgrade due to much worse throttle response. In addition to the added FMIC volume, it's possible there was a leak somewhere since the silicon couplers are very difficult to access, but I couldn't find one using the usual bubble method. Plus, the T-Bolts they included were 1/4" too short to clamp over the coupler thickness. There is also a decent amount of modification required behind the lower grille and to the main attachment bolts. The VRSF FMIC itself was gorgeous, so gorgeous it weighed 20 pounds vs BMW's 4 pound piece of crap. It adds a bit of weight to the chin.
So I sold it and bought a drop-in 5" Mishimoto FMIC with quick connects. It still took an hour line up and click, as the angles were about 1/8th" off for my car and BMW's piping is so cheap and thin it is easy to tear or kink with one wrong move. The Mishimoto is definitely air tight as throttle response seems slightly better than stock, but I really don't feel much of a power gain, maybe a little extra spunk here and there. It's tough to say since FMICs are supposed to add nothing, just lose less when things heat up.
One thing is for sure, the OEM BMW FMIC is a tiny tin and plastic POS. Just another embarrassing, terrible quality part I've pulled out of this car.
At any rate, spend a little more for an FMIC with the quick connects, it's well worth the extra money.
