HPFP failing? -
04-21-2022, 12:44 PM
Car has been hesitating/spluttering under throttle lately, it started out as just a little hiccup around the 3k range that didn't really cause much concern, but has worsened to the point of being undriveable now when it happens.
Now when it stutters, its followed by the whole engine shaking with it and then runs/idles super irratic and lumpy and cant accelerate. If I pull over and restart the engine it goes back to normal, but keeps happening all the time now!
I put it in map 5 tonight and recorded a log, on the second pull it happened again and threw it into map 4, so im hoping its recorded the issue for you guys to try diagnose the problem for me.
It also might be worth noting its thrown a 29E2 and 29F2 code...

HPFP is not strong enough. What fuel are you currently running?

Thanks for the reply! On this log I was just running standard 95 ron pump fuel. I filled her up with shell Vpower 99 ron yesterday and tried a few pulls in map 2 but just keeps throwing engine light.
Just changed all the plugs yesterday hoping that would help, because they had seen better days anyway. But nope, unless I’m in map 0, any other map as soon as I accelerate it falls flat on its face and shuts down multiple cylinders until I restart engine.
Just hit 100k on the car, not sure if it’s ever had a fuel pump replacement by previous owners or anything and I know they’re a known issue on these cars. Time to get a replacement do you think?

One thing to note, your LPFP is following your HPFP & also tanking hard (values in the 50s).
How is your car on cold start? Are you getting long cranks or anything like that?
It might be worth looking at upgrading your LPFP & getting the HPFP replaced.

Hi Dave, no, this is the confusing thing, the cold starts have been perfect. Nothing to suggest anything in that regard, it fires up instantly straight away every time.
The problem has also been intermittent too which also threw us off for a while. In map 1 or 0, most times you can put foot to floor and drive it aggressively and it doesn’t miss a beat, the next minute, you can be casually pottering around and on the slightest acceleration will throw the engine light and misfire. Also, sometimes when the engine is restarted after misfiring, it will go back to normal and drive fine if taken steady, other times it will throw the engine light again straight away regardless and struggle to idle etc. it’s hit and miss. But lately, anytime it’s in map 2 or 5 and you accelerate hard it will fail every time.
I’m not getting any specific cylinder misfire codes though, all the coils and plugs are new. It’s just the fuel injection rail pressure, cylinder injection switch off and HPFP/open loop - 29E2, 29DC, 29F2. These are the codes that have been logged at some point when I read them the other night.

Is your LPFP OEM?
If the HPFP has no other symptoms, I'd look into upgrading the LPFP.

I’m guessing it is OEM yeah! Ok, so try the LPFP first and then if still issues, replace the HPFP too afterwards?
I’m on it 😎 thanks for the advice!
