Default PnP 6AT Transmission cooler - 04-01-2016, 08:39 PM

Edit: group buy is up in the for sale section.

Whats up everyone,

I've been working on a kit for a few weeks now and have finally come up with something that I believe will be a no compromise solution for the cooling demands of the 6hp21 in our cars.

With the new data points we have available with temp monitoring its quickly becoming apparent that this is yet another major weakness in the n54's cooling system.

What I have put together will be a fully bolt on, no trimming, drilling or cutting replacement of the factory heat exchanger.
It will utilize
- xlr8dmotorsports ATF cooler adapter fittings.
- Improved racing 165* t-stat,
- Improved racing FXH225 core
- Fragola -8an fittings with aeroquip hose
- Fully custom bracketry for the lines, core and t stat.
- Plugs and clamps for factory coolant lines

At this point i'm going to fab a small batch of the final revision of bracketry, do finish powder coating and then finally assemble a few complete kits.

I must give credit to Aubeast86 for inspiring the design as well as his line adapters which are the base of my kit. He has been extremely helpful throughout this process and really went out of his way to help with questions and ideas.

Anyways enough rambling, here is a picture from the final mock-up

*final note, the hose pictured is not what will be used in the final revision

Looks good. When will you have results of the trans temps with this kit? Now that the JB4 logs trans temps, we know what cruising temps are and what spirited driving temps reach. Hopefully your kit lowers oil temps 20+ degrees. If so, depending on the price, I will for sure want a kit.

Hopefully going to have the car back on the road in a few weeks. You can extrapolate some of Aubeast86 results as his setup is very similar but with a smaller core. He has some documentation down here http://www.xlr8dmotorsports.com/bmw-...pter-fittings/

Will this utilize the stock heat exchanger unit as some of us live in cold climates? If so, how will you hook up the outlet from heat exchanger?

Also you might want to stick to the LPD (low pressure drop) coolers that are made specifically for transmissions. Huge coolers and 30psi of pressure might be a problem.

Trans coolers are a myth and not necessary.

Only in the fact that it cools a fluid, one thing to note would be if you were running there dual cooler setup this would not be compatible. But thats fairly obvious from the pictures

That may* be applicable if no thermostat were being run, but with the use of the improved racing unit would actually be quite redundant. The design of the IR t stat does the same thing as a low pressure drop core but in a much more efficient manner and also without sacrificing the efficiency of the core.

How can a thermostat be LPD?

Lpd tran coolers just utilize a internal bypass to allow cold "thicker fluid" to flow through easier. It's basically a work around to running a thermostat which is the better way to do it. With the ir thermostat around 90 percent of the fluid is able to completely bypass the cooler until it warms up, then it is directed to the core when it reaches temp.

But the point either way is pointless because the way the cooling circuit is designed in the 6hp pressure drop in the core has no effect on other control circuits of the transmission

Feel free to pm me if you have any other concerns.

I have installed a 36 plate, 11x8 core trans cooler plumbed in with a 160 tstat and inline with the heat exchanger. Working awesome! Quick warm up times and barely hits 170 after back to back pulls. This should have been done a long time ago i think.
