Default BMW X5 50i - N63 - Engine Failure - Any Advice? - 08-21-2021, 08:36 AM

I've got a 2012 BMW X5 50i with only 70,000 miles that just, out of the blue, got an error that said it was running at 50% power and to get serviced as soon as possible. Before I could get it home (less than 3 miles), it started knocking. Got it into service and the engine is blown. Apparently it's a common issue with this engine (4.4l v8 twin turbo) called hydro-lock, where at least one cylinder floods with liquid gas and eventually causes a rod to break. At any rate, local BMW service center said they thought BMW North America may help out with a replacement engine (nearly $40,000 to replace). So, I contacted them and, unfortunately, after 4-5 days, they say they're not going to offer any assistance at all. But, if I want, they'll give me $1,500 for the car as a trade-in on a new BMW. LOL. That $1,500 offer was insulting, to say the least. At any rate, does anyone know if there's any further recourse / action I may be able to take? This is a known problem with these engines and there have been several class action law suits filed against BMW, but they have all settled out of court. The local BMW dealer said they had hoped it was the timing chain that broke, as they would likely replace the engine if that were the case. But, since it was the hydro-lock issue, they're not going to help. Any advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated.https://19216811.cam/ https://1921681001.id/

I have NEVER heard of an N63 hydrolocking. Thats a 1st gen N63. Its likely the chain tensioners. They won't help you out because you didn't buy the vehicle new. I had the same situation with my 11 750.

Luckily for you, replacement is nowhere near $40k. N63 prices plummeted. You can pickup a BMW rebuilt long block (short engine), part number 11002296771, for around $3300. Even with labor, you should be comfortably under $8,000.
