Default Installation Help needed! X5 M50i - 03-13-2021, 07:38 PM

Hey, I feel dumb, but in my defense, the installation instructions are not that specific... lol

Trying to install JB4 Stage 1 on my 2020 X5 M50i..

Engine bay is below, and I am trying to install Tmap connectors on each side.. Rainbow on driver side and brown on passenger yeah yeah... but where the heck is the connector they go to????

P.S. Geez the limit is low on JPEG's!

On the side of the drivers intercooler, down near the bottom. And in the front of the passengers one, near the side/bottom.

Will do. It isn't easy to reach the TMAP plugs, they are deep down there unlike other N63 chassis where the engine seems to sit a little higher, at least the inter coolers seem to be higher anyways. Will try sometime this week.

So it is not possible to install JB4 without removing some stuff... see pictures.. hopefully helps someone who needs the same install.

In terms of performance, there is a noticeable increase in power and torque. I had the Stage 1 for my X5 with the N63 (not TU), and I couldn't even tell a difference. Here with the N63R I can tell! Nice bump in power, and feels just as fast as the X3M Comp I used to have.

Oh, that’s right. I forgot the X series had those Helmholtz resonators on the intake tract piping.
Yeah, those are definitely blocking access. Killing the sound too.

The issue isn't the resonator so much, but more so because of the intake ducting itself. The N63 has pretty much had the same intake ducting since the original N63, though I don't recall the bulbous resonators being there. I didn't take a picture of the precise spot and angle, but access to the TMAP is just too deep down in there to be able to access it. Quick enough to install anyway, and pleased that it's much easier to install than the original Jb4 for the 335i.. lol

Ah, I see. On the G30 LCI, there is no ducting. The passengers side I can get without removing anything. The drivers side I need to pull the brace and air box.

So the '20 and '21 M50i are the same under the hood?

Thank You very much for the detailed install pics and performance evaluation. Did you connect to the OBD port under the dash? Did you go through the firewall or around the driver door hinge area.
Looking forward to getting a JB4 hopefully this week. I wanted to do this a couple months ago but life has been crazy.
A nice power bump on a vehicle that is already very strong will be great.

Glad it helped. Figured since I found basically nothing on the install, definitely were others or will be others in my position. I am only running stage 1, so no full JB4 functionality. Installation of OBII will most likely be the same or similar as other platforms. Be great to run full JB4 to see how the car gets untapped with 93 or small E85 mixes.

You can run up to E25 stock according to the manual, so I’d assume you could do the same with the tuner set up as a Stage 1.

I'm wondering if connecting the JB4 to the OBD port would allow for more boost depending on which map is selected. I'm going to run the cable the easy way around the door jamb initially.

For stage 1 is does not matter unless you want the ability to do logs and also desire to use above map 1, then I believe it is recommended to use all provided connectors, and to do baseline logging. From there a full selection of maps depending on tuning and fuel choices. Now, I wonder if at some point JB4 would stack well with an OTS tune...
