Default N54 under boost target question - 06-11-2019, 09:34 PM

Good evening fellow N54ers.
I am looking for some advice if possible. My car which is a 2008 535i seems sluggish at low rpm but pulls hard higher up the rev range, the car runs fine otherwise and has been mostly great since my HPFP failure last year.
I have had the JB4 installed for 3 or more years and I have the BMS DCI, everything else is stock. I've been looking over the logs and it would seem like I am under boost target at low RPMs but on target higher up. Do you think I have a boost/vacuum leak? Any common failure points to check? I have attached a log below and would appreciate any feedback anyone can offer.
Apologies for the short logs, I was in town this evening and have not made a full 3rd gear pull as you suggest.

Thank you guys in advance.

so far your FF is high which mostly means a leak I guess, try to lower your ff back to 90 and see if it learn up again.

also your AFR looks on the 14 and 15 which is somehow not right. which fuel you are running?

maybe also if you enable the timing on cylinder 2 to 6 would help more to see the timing on all cylinders.

others may have also other saying on your logs.

My fuel consumption has been very high recently so I am running just 91 pump gas. I typically get 13 MPG and that is with my wife driving the car very sedately. What is the preferred AFR?
Thank you for your reply.

You could check for leaks and check solenoids/vac, but looks to me like a typical high-mileage turbo log. The initial onset of spool up looks a little delayed though, but then it goes up pretty quickly. Might be something going on.

You are running a very old firmware, you could try updating - but NOTE, you will need to reset your user adjustment tab because your version is so far behind, the settings might get scrambled.

Default Update - 06-12-2019, 08:59 PM

Hey guys, thanks for your input so far.
I updated to the latest firmware today and every thing runs very smooth but now it痴 even more down on power, it does not pull hard anymore higher up the Rev range like it did on the old firmware.
I have attached a log below and it seems like I知 am way under boost throughout.
Any ideas?

Thank you friends,

Thank you friends,
not so sure why your boost low while target is ok and wgdc is ok.

confirm your menu 4 on steering wheel that on 3 if you are stock flash, maybe also check menu 4/7 transport mode on/off ?

others may have a different opinion and see something else in the log....

Agree with above about checking menu 4. Your boost is following DME curve. But also, is it possible your JB4 is old enough to be non-ISO?

You seemed to be a bit lean during spool up. I noticed there was an E85 setting configured I am not familiar with. Might need to fix that on WMI tab?

There might be adaptations that need to re-learn as well now that you upgraded and reset the settings. I think FF needs to learn up and possibly FOL.

Thanks Vorsprung for your time to look at my log.
I am on 4/3 for OEM, will check transport mode shortly. I believe I have the G5 iso board but now I’m second guessing myself.
If I open the box and I am not iso I need to cut the 2 resistors right?

Thank you kind men.

Did you buy the board new and when? Or was it used? Only early boards were non-ISO so maybe we can rule it out before you disassemble everything.

It was sold as new on eBay some 3 or more years ago. It looked new but was missing some original packaging. It is a square box, not the rectangular one if that is any way to identify? I drove the car tonight to attend a meeting and disabled the jb4 with map 0 and it drives perfectly. I wish I never updated the firmware as it’s totally unresponsive now in map 1 and 5.
I will update you guys tomorrow.

Thank you.

Sorry about that, usually having the newer FW is helpful as it logs more and has additional settings. Its possible you still have a separate issue or a settings issue.

The square enclosure is the newer one, but it could have been purchased separately for older boards. You'd have to open it and look at the board.

I can confirm I have the newer iso board with no diodes present. Any ideas anyone?
Thank you for your help so far.

Definitely G5 ISO. Did you have an updated log? We'll try to get your sorted out.

Default Map 1 log - 06-17-2019, 06:12 PM

Here is a map 1 log from tonight. Map 5 pulls harder up the Rev range and does not trigger the CEL. This map 1 pull ended in limp mode with codes 3100 and 2A87. Will the exhaust solenoid cause this? Not seen these codes before but I知 usually in map 5.
Thanks again.

Thanks,

User adjustments & then select the appropriate value for your specific DME

Thanks Dave. Quick question, can we work with 2nd gear logs? I know 3rd is optimal but living in West LA makes that somewhat tricky to do regularly like I need to. Also is the OSX interface fully compatible or is windows the interface preferred?
Thanks,

Thanks,
3rd gear is better; second gear logs are usually extremely short

Whatever interface you want to use is okay

Hey guys,

Quick update, I have changed the pair of vanos solenoids as they were suspect anyway and visually inspected all charge ***** and vacuum lines with nothing obvious found.
I am still under target and my FF values keep rising, 138 now.
I have enabled 6 cylinder timing as requested and would love some direction if anyone has any ideas?
After clearing the old codes none have reappeared and my last pull did not engage limp mode like before but its still way down on boost.

Thank you all for your continued support, I hope to find an answer soon.

Still way under

Have you done a pressure or boost leak test?

Default Going crazy - 07-01-2019, 09:09 PM

Hey Dave,
Quick update... I知 going round in circles with this darn issue. I did a boost leak test and though I had found the culprit. The front diverter valve was leaking around the O ring, I was so happy, for a minute anyway. I have now fixed this leak but I知 still way under target, but it changes on different maps. Map 0 target boost is 8 and I boost to 4 and then is drops to 3 quickly where it remains, map 1 boosts to around 9 when targeting 12 and then sharply backs down to 5 or 6 and map 5 boosts to just over 12 before quickly descending to around 8-9.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? No codes except the occasional 30FF and on one occasion under light throttle the half light. I also just replaced the intake manifold gaskets and a few vacuum lines but no difference. I have zero audible waste hate rattle either?

Please help my sanity.

Thanks again
