Default BMW N20 reliability and Carbon buildup? - 07-18-2020, 12:55 AM

We currently own 2 BMW's, a 2015 335i (n55 obviously) and a 2014 X3 with the N20. My question is related to the N20 and it's reliability and carbon buildup. Right now the X3 has 30k miles on it and we change the oil in both cars once between the recommended BMW service interval which is 11-12k (too long IMO).

With the X3 going to be out of warranty in a year I'm trying to figure out if I want to fork out money for extended service/warranty, trade it or just take my chance. If I trade I probably need to start test driving alternatives sooner rather than later because it takes me FOREVER to pull the trigger.

Right now there's not a lot of information on the long-term reliability of this N20 engine. Yes I know Jalopnik likes to post click bait about them blowing up, but honestly, that doesn't seem to be a common issue at all on these cars. If it is I'm sure one or more of the BMW techs here will let me know.

I'm really more concerned about ridiculous maintenance costs on things like walnut blasting, spark plugs, and other services that may be required to keep it running in top shape. Any thoughts would be appreciated. happymod
