By default the JB4 ships on map1. For higher boost map, logging, firmware updates, and other features, you'll need a JB4 Mobile adapter for wireless connection to your phone or a BMS data cable for wired connection to a laptop.

Map guide as of v15+ firmware (selected via JB4 Mobile/laptop interface. Map1 is the default map)

Map 0: JB4 disabled
Map 1: 4psi over stock peak tapering to 2.5psi at high RPM. Default performance map suitable for all 91+ octane fuels.
Map 2: 5psi over stock tapering to 4psi at high RPM. Suggested for 93+ octane fuel.
Map 3: 6psi stock tapering to 5psi at high RPM. Suggested for high quality fuel including unleaded race gas, ethanol mixtures up to 30%, or high quality octane booster like Torco or Boostane.
Map 4: Up to 7psi over stock. For use with unleaded race fuel and/or E85 mixtures up to 30%.
Map 5: Up to 7psi over stock but without top end taper. For unleaded race fuel use and bolt on modifications. May not be suitable for E85 mixtures due to high fuel pressure dropping. If using this map on E85 you should be experienced at reading your own logs and evaluating ignition advance and fuel pressure.
Map 6: User adjustable map. Enter value of boost over stock by RPM on user adjustment page.
Map 7: Progressive WMI (water/meth) map. Increases boost as a function of methanol flow & methanol boost additive. Holds boost low until WMI is flowing to avoid tip-in knock, and reduces boost as a function of WMI flow in the event of interruption like running out of fluid, leak, or component failure.
Map 8: Valet map, runs around half as much boost as stock.

JB4 User Adjustment Settings as of v15 firmware:

Boost by gear: Enter amount of boost reduction in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear. Very useful for improving traction on RWD vehicles. We generally run 5psi in 1st, 1psi in 2nd, on our GT on stock tires to avoid wheel spin during launch mode. This reduces boost in 1st gear by 5psi, and reduces boost in 2nd gear by 1psi. You can reduce boost below factory levels as needed.

Fuel Bias: Used to fine tune fuel control if you disable the preset mapping using option bit1. Not suggested for most. Once enabled a value of 140 will target 14:1, 120 will target 12:1, 13.2 will target 13.2:1, etc. Note you won't exactly hit the target so you'll need to datalog and evaluate. Going too rich will result in fuel pressure drops and stuttering, and going too lean may result in increased knock activity.

Map6 Boost: Allows you to enter a customized boost profile. You'll enter only peak boost over stock here, so 6.0 means add a maximum of 6psi over stock, at that RPM point. The JB4 will blend this request with pedal input, engine temperatures, etc, to provide a smooth mapping. Generally this is only used for advanced customers who are able to read their logs and looking to make a map less aggressive than our off the shelf maps.

Options (formerly FUD) settings as of v14 firmware:

bit0 - Turn on to disable JB4 fuel control or if optional fuel wires are not installed.
bit1 - Turn on to enable manual fuel control adjustment by RPM. Generally not suggested unless advised by a tuner. See firmware notes for how adjustment is entered.
bit2 - Turn on to disable JB4 hot/cold water & oil temperature protection
bit3 - Turn on for slow speed CANbus, useful for some older models.
bit4 - Turn on to disable JB4 over boost, run lean, and fuel pressure safety systems.
bit5 - Disable EWG connectors if installed.
bit6 - Turn on if vehicle has an aftermarket flash map loaded to the ECU.
bit7 - Turn on to run more linear (sluggish) gas pedal to boost mapping.

FutureUseA (FUA) as of v22 firmware:

FUA 1: Show cyl 2-6 as raw timing rather than timing corrections.
FUA 2: Required for 2018 and earlier 1.6L models
FUA 3: Required for 2019+ 1.6L models

LagFix BETA (DWP) as of v22 firmware:

Added in v22 and newer firmware this feature is used to boost pedal response and reduce turbo lag during routine driving. LagFix is enabled using the (mislabeled) DWP setting on the JB4 user adjustment page. A value of 0 disables the feature. A value of 100 is the "maximum effect". Most report values of 60-80 feel best behind the wheel so feel free to play around and see what works for your specific driving style.

Spark Plugs:

Only map1 has a chance of working well with the factory plug gap. For the 3.3L we suggest closing the gap on the stock plugs to 0.024", or replacing the stock plugs with Denso 5346 plugs and gapping them to 0.022". For the 2L and other motors we suggest HKS plugs gapped 0.022" to 0.026".

Fuel Control Wires:

These add on wires attach to the JB4 harness and your vehicles sensors to give the JB4 the ability to directly change the air/fuel ratio. The factory tuning runs in the 10:1 range and leaning that out to 11.5:1 has proven to be worth significant power at higher engine speed. Note these are preinstalled on the JB4 harness now so only need to be attached to the o2 sensor signal wire to enable using the included posi-taps or optional harness adapters.

No JB4 setting changes are needed to enable the fuel control wires.

Forward video to 4min for systems already equipped with fuel wires to see how to attach them.

For 3.3L they attach to the o2 sensor signal RED wire. For those using the optional PNP adapters the 3.3L signal wire is also RED for your convenience.

For 2L applications only the longer wire is used and it goes to the primary o2 sensor signal WHITE wire. For those using our PNP adapter it's the black wire in position #2

For 1.6L applications only the longer wire is used and it goes to the primary o2 sensor BLUE wire. There is minimal tuning benefit on the 1.6L models so for now we only suggest connecting them if you plan to run E85 mixtures or WMI. If using our PNP adapter it's the red wire.



JB4 Mobile / Blue Tooth attachment:

Note newer systems have the blue wire built in to the harness. If your blue tooth adapter does not have a spare/loose blue wire and instead has that blue wire pinned in to the JB4 connector then all you need to do is attach the blue tooth adapter to the JB4 control board. Skip the posi-tap directions as those only apply to older models with a loose blue wire.

This is good news, but the one thing about Kia is that they will happily void your engine warranty if they ever see any non-factory engine mods. On the bright side, however, a piggyback unit can always be removed prior to any service visits.

He happens to work for a Kia dealer and told me as long as you remove the parts before going in generally it's not a problem. He said they are scanning the cars checking for flash tuning though now. Per usual if you can't afford to fix it, don't risk modifying it, but we expect our tuning to be very reliable. The motor appears overbuilt for the factory power levels.

v14

1) Changes to the EWG targeting for those testing out EWG connectors.
2) Minor fuel targeting change

v13

1) Adjusted boost scaling in JB4 app to reflect ~10% higher boost levels to better match up the JB4 with external boost gauges.
2) Revised double PID fuel control system for smoother performance and easier user adjustment
3) For people who prefer to custom tune improved user interface for user adjustable fuel control. Enabled by setting options bit1 on, the fuel bias values will now represent the "target" air/fuel ratio. e.g. 120 = 12.0:1, 125 = 12.5:1. Actual AFR will generally be richer than the target. Current logic allows for leaning AFR from factory only. The default JB4 setting is 120. You may require a JB4 Mobile app update to allow values of more than 100 under fuel bias.
4) Logical changes to facilitate upcoming electronic wastegate (EWG) control.
5) Increased sampling speed while logging is active to further smooth out performance.
6) Revised map4 VALET map to make it more usable.
7) Revisions to E85 auto tuning map for those equipped with a Fuel-IT Flex Fuel sensor.
8) Leaned out map5 and map7 to help reduce the likelihood for a fuel pressure crash on E85 mixtures.
Note this firmware is the same as V13_T13 firmware for those who helped alpha test it.

v12

1) Connected JB4 to transmission so it can read trans gear, trans temperature, torque converter slippage, and other criteria being incorporated in to the JB4's tuning and safety systems. For now gear and transtemp are available in the logging app. Gear reflected is "requested" gear while we've put "current gear" under "load" in the app. "requested" is what is shown in dash and a better indicator of what we're looking for as "current gear" will lag a second or two behind the shift.
2) Adjusted flex fuel sensor logic. The suggested JB4 input for the flex fuel sensor signal wire is spot #4. To enable E85 reading on that spot select E85 Sensor 2/3 on the E85/WMI page. Alternatively the signal can also be plugged in to spot #16 and you'll select E85 Sensor 15/16 on the E85/WMI page.
3) Configured map8 so it can also be used as a variable additive map as a function of ethanol sensor input. If running this email me ahead as I want to keep an eye on the first few cars.
4) Adjusted boost by gear logic to use actual gear above. Note for older models or manual transmission applications where gear doesn't read properly, if gear reading is 0, JB4 will revert to boost by speed settings.
5) Minor scaling change to ECU_PSI readings to correct a bug created in v11.
6) Increased sampling rate on analog sensor input/output channels psi and psi2 for generally smoother operation.
7) Adjusted map4, low boost VALET map, to try to avoid triggering a zero boost fault during full throttle operation.

It seems a lot of the tuning options are for the 3.3TT, but I’m sure there still a lot of interest with the 2.0T platform.

That would be great! Do they have to be local to Simi Valley or would any location work? How many testers were you thinking? I'd add my name to the list and happy to put the word out to others.

Installed my tester last night and only got to drive it for about 10 minutes because it was so late, but I can say first impressions are VERY positive. Car feels more powerful any gear any revs. Used launch control and it noticeably removed the slight delay it had before. I can also feel my car squatting more than it did before.

Was able to install the JB4 this evening and make a couple pulls with data. It looks like the boost is low, but I'm not sure Im reading the data right.

Well I've got some not so encouraging news. I took the car out for a few pulls, and on pull three we most definitely has issues.

I ran the car in mode 0 (disabled) and twice in mode two (+4psi). The first time things went without a hitch. Drove a couple of miles and went to pull again, and about half way through a WOT pull I got a solid check engine light that went off after finishing the pull (got up to 80Mph and let off). Slowed down to make the turn onto another road, and when I gave the car a little throttle to start speeding up I started getting misfires and the check engine light was back on. Drove the remaining mile to my house in that condition, and when I placed it in park, she was idling very rough, definite misfire.

Fired up the laptop and set the tune back down to mode 0 (disabled) and gave the car a few minutes, then fired it back up. Car ran as normal. Gave it a few hard accelerations in park up to 5krpm, and everything still ran fine as can be, with no check engine light.

I've got the entire sessions (all three pulls) recorded on my snapon diagnostics setup (should be able to be watch on the free ShopStream Connect software, and pictures of the maximum pre-chip MAP sensor voltage for each of the pulls as well.

I've enclosed a zip that has the session file, the software to view it, and a picture of the max map sensor voltage reading named to match the mark where the max boost occurred on the SnapOn Playback.

Misfires at higher boost levels are not unexpected on the platform from what I've heard. You will probably need new plugs with a tighter gap at some point. How many miles do you have? Read and share the specific codes you're getting when you can.

For data appreciate what you tried to collect but none of it is useful for us. We only need logs from the JB4 itself using the interface in the first post, as anything boost or voltage related from the OBDII port won't be accurate anyway. And the JB4 outputs all the raw sensor outputs we need.

I've also added updated JB4 firmware to the first post to correct a scaling issue on the boost logging. Load that and log map1.

Yeah, unfortunately I wasn't running the logging for the JB4 at the time, so I'll have to give it a go again running it as well. Was doing the engine stats off the snap-on and pre-JB4 MAP voltage readings because I figured having that would be helpful as well, and from what I can see, the JB4 can't poll any of that in it's logger as of now (aside from the ecu psi and boost that a noticed it was logging) since the canbus module isn't ready for the stinger yet.

Was wondering if the plug issues would rear it's head or not after getting heavier into the boost settings.

Ran map 1 earlier today while I was playing with logging and didn't hit any issues while running those settings. Boost seemed to trend stock about 3 pounds through high rpm as expected, and was holding a boost a touch longer when letting off throttle than stock settings.

I'll do the firmware update and some logging on map1 tommorow and see if any issues pop back up, as I went out just a bit ago and ran the car through it's paces on map0 and it never acted up.

Ah got it, OK I'll check the OBDII data out you grabbed when time permits. I removed the file from the forum as 23mb is more space than I want to store on the forum server. For large files like that in the future email them but for smaller files like JB4 CSV logs those can be attached. Actually if you can take your OBDII data and throw it in to a chart format the JPG is all I'd need to see. RPM, fuel trims (bank1 is fine), AFR (again bank1 is fine), Cyl1 timing, throttle, and pedal, will get us started there.

Yes getting the CANbus active is on the short list of things to get done! And lets us enable several unique safety systems the JB4 has including run lean protection, autotuning based on timing feedback, etc.

Yeah having the canbus access will be great (I can also probably probe out some of the values while I have the OBDII logger on hand). If not I'll probe them later with my GPIO setup.

No issues on removing the upload, figured I better supply a way to read the data at least once lol. The session itself was fairly small thank goodness. I'll swap out the graphed information to match any of the values you need. I can snapshot in the program, so instead of running the whole session I will zoom in on the area coming in and out of WOT and get a jpeg screenshot. I know most of what you asking for is accessible via the scanner, I'll let you know what all isn't there. This scanner is a software version behind unfortunately, but I've been told even the most recent is missing this car right now (go figure).

What really ticks me off is this unit has a 4 channels DMM with a logging function, that I had plans on using to grab the pre and post JB4 module voltages on TMAP and MAP, so that i could log them in sync with the rest of the data (essentially what the JD4 would be doing with canbus active, except we'd have to do the voltage to psig conversion from the sensor datasheet). HOWEVER, the dang thing won't do DMM logging and OBDII logging at the same time! Its either one or the other, :(

So some good news and bad news..

1. Good news- I received it yesterday and it took all of 5 minutes to install... The first impressions were amazing.. IMO, this is how aggressive it should be out of the gate.. speed is immediate and it moves with purpose.. Only using Map 1.

2. Bad news - it started sputtering and the check engine flickered a few times during normal acceleration on the highway to work this morning.. So bad, I pulled off to a remote parking lot and removed it. It was in the 30’s last night, 42 degrees this morning and the car was at normal operating temperature.

I ordered the REV3 this morning for Map changing and data logging. It’s going to be cold and rainy for the next week or so and I want to get as much data logged and sent to Terry.

Hello everybody, I received my JB4 Friday night for the Stinger and installed it Saturday morning to test it out (default map). All I got to say is WOW this car is a whole different animal, throttle response is a lot better and it just pulls when you floor it, it just feels like its in race mode. Shifts are smooth and other mode work as they should but when you put it in sport mode(Beast mode) hold on! So I spent most of the day just testing it out on PCH, Topanga canyon, Mulholland, long freeway runs and the highest that I pushed it was 140mph( in Mexico ) before I let off, smooth shifting and no problems unfortunately I did not data log, my laptop was at my parents house.
Now comes Sunday, I go to the high desert to get my laptop from my parents house so I can data log the tune and test other tune on the jb4. After I left my parents house with the laptop(not charged) I took a quick run down route 66 to do some wot pulls and that's when I experienced a quick engine check light(turned off right away) and misfire ( I assume) I did another pull and same thing but no check engine light this time, it would do this every time I WOT. I took it off and everything worked fine no problem, drove back to LA. I will put it back on once im ready to log with my laptop(fully charged).

If everyone gets misfires at higher boost levels we may have to start stocking spark plugs for the motor. :)

Be sure to update the firmware and let me know how map1 does. One of our goals is to have a map1 that will not misfire even on weak plugs (assuming the stock tuning doesn't misfire), and then the higher maps are for those who want to experiment with higher power levels, ,knowing plugs may become an issue.

All I got to say is WOW this car is a whole different animal, throttle response is a lot better and it just pulls when you floor it, it just feels like its in race mode. Shifts are smooth and other mode work as they should but when you put it in sport mode(Beast mode) hold on! So I spent most of the day just testing it out on PCH, Topanga canyon, Mulholland, long freeway runs and the highest that I pushed it was 140mph( in Mexico ) before I let off, smooth shifting and no problems unfortunately I did not data log, my laptop was at my parents house.
Now comes Sunday, I go to the high desert to get my laptop from my parents house so I can data log the tune and test other tune on the jb4. After I left my parents house with the laptop(not charged) I took a quick run down route 66 to do some wot pulls and that's when I experienced a quick engine check light(turned off right away) and misfire ( I assume) I did another pull and same thing but no check engine light this time, it would do this every time I WOT. I took it off and everything worked fine no problem, drove back to LA. I will put it back on once im ready to log with my laptop(fully charged).

What octane fuel are you running?

Thanks Terry, I will get the firmware updated.. what plugs do you suggest? I ordered a set of HKS M45iL Spark Plugs this morning and shortly after was messaged by a Kia tech about some horror stories with these very expensive plugs... I want to get these swapped so that I am getting maximum benefits from the JB4 and not let sub par plugs ruin it.

Be sure to update the firmware and let me know how map1 does. One of our goals is to have a map1 that will not misfire even on weak plugs (assuming the stock tuning doesn't misfire), and then the higher maps are for those who want to experiment with higher power levels, ,knowing plugs may become an issue.

We haven't tested or evaluated any of the plug options yet, so no advice to offer yet. But we will!

Hey all, when downloading the JB4 program to my laptop I ran into a "Your administrator has blocked this application because it potentially poses a security risk to your computer" this is a known issue when it comes to third part applications and here is the solution:
