3166 Code

Installed the JB4 a few weeks ago on my 2013 E93. Car seems to run fine but about every 150 to 200 miles it throws a 3166 code. Didn't give these codes in the past. I've searched this forum and other forums on 3166 codes but I don't see anything on a real solution. I'm running MAP 5

Also what exactly is a "tuner code?" I see people referring to tuner codes but I can't find a definition of what that means.

Finally - using the iOS app I can't seem to get the H2O or tranny gauge temp to work. Just says 0

Payam @ BMS 10-08-2018 09:17 AM

Does a CEL come up with the 3166 code or is that just the tuner code?

Are you on the most update Jb4 firmware?

Update latest firmware and plug the stock MAP connector harness in. Cel should go away and never come back

mfromani 10-09-2018 02:56 PM

CEL would come up. I just updated firmware earlier today using JB4 mobile.

So do you mean don't hook the MAP connector to the JB4?

CTM95 10-12-2018 04:15 PM

I am having the same issue, I installed the JB4 with the connect kit and updated to the 17_T5 firmware about a month ago and with in the first 30 miles got the 3166 code. I cleared it and it keeps coming back within 50 miles, if I don’t clear it within a day it’ll throw a SES light. It happens on maps 1,2,4, and 5 but not 0. I’m also getting an intermittent 2C90 that I’m not sure is related but it happens on all maps but 0 even with default settings on menu 10,11, and 12.

Disconnect the Jb4 harness from the MAP connector harness and plug the stock one in. Leave the jb4 one unplugged. You're all set to go now.

I actually just installed the JB4 on my 2014 X1 and had the same code come up. So you're saying I should only have the TMAP, Fuel pressure wires (FF), and the Boost solenoid wires hooked up?

I am running 5.14.T8

When I spoke to Ando @ BMS he said I needed to be on the latest firmware, which should be 5.17. And correct, leave the MAP sensor unplugged and dangling around. I zip tied mine to the big harness.

It was a typo on my part. I am running 5.17.T8. I will give it a shot tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up.

Sounds good, it'll fix it 100% guaranteed! :happy

On my X1 (stock turbo, stock BEF, JB4 firmware version 5.17_T5), running the JB4 disconnected from the MAP sensor (i.e. stock connected) did fix the 3166 code. I ran it this way for several thousand miles with no real problems, but it did cause a constant 28A0 code (throttle-valve angle - intake manifold pressure correlation: limit value exceeded). This would show up as a 'tuner code', but for unknown reasons it would sometimes trip the CEL. I would clear it, drive for a couple of days, and the CEL would come on again, and the only code showing was 28A0.

Eventually, it seemed to trip a nuisance CEL about as much as the 3166 code did. So, figuring more data to the JB4 is better than less (all things being equal), I've reconnected the MAP sensor to the JB4. Hopefully, the 3166 bug gets fixed in the next JB4 firmware.

WeekendWarriorz 10-22-2018 05:19 PM

Hmm, my car hasn’t had any codes, I’ve seen in another thread that this has fixed the issue for other cars too. Hopefully terry can make a once and for all fix in a new firmware update

MrHaloHalo 10-22-2018 05:29 PM

Maybe its because I'm still on the stock BEF, or maybe its an X1 thing? I'll be curious to hear if others (particularly X1 owners) running the JB4 disconnected from the MAP sensor report getting the 28A0 code/CEL.

I cannot imagine this being specific to the X1. It may have something to do with the stock flash however.

mishmosh 10-26-2018 02:26 PM

I'm getting this on my X1 as well. 3166 does not turn up at all on map 0. It will show up after some driving on map 5. If you don't clear it, it'll trip the check engine light after some more driving. I'd like to say it's been going on for at least 3 months now but I haven't tried anything. Will connect up the stock MAP connector to see if that really works. THANKS

Bimmer_Boost 10-26-2018 10:21 PM

I haven't been able to test mine yet. Someone hit me in a parking lot so the car is going to the body shop first.

CTM95 10-27-2018 07:09 PM

I got around to switching back to the stock MAP, after putting quite a few miles on it my 3166 is gone but I'm now also having the 28A0 that throws the CEL after a while. I'm in a 135is so it's not an X1 specific thing.

WeekendWarriorz 10-27-2018 07:21 PM

Are you guys on the newest firmware? My late e has no codes and I’m on the newest firmware with the map unplugged. 2012 here

CTM95 10-27-2018 07:50 PM

Just checked again to be sure, and I am on the most current firmware.

MrHaloHalo 10-27-2018 09:55 PM

CTM95: Are you still on the stock DME flash, or do you have a BEF?

CTM95 10-27-2018 09:59 PM

Still on the stock DME flash.

MrHaloHalo 10-27-2018 10:21 PM

Interesting - hopefully this will be useful info for Terry :)

Terry @ BMS 10-30-2018 08:45 AM

3166 is probably somehow tuning related to the DWP settings. Tried DWP = 0 to see if that helps?

CTM95 10-31-2018 02:46 PM

I will be switching back to the JB4 MAP connection this weekend as the 28A0 seems to trip the SES light much quicker and more frequently than the 3166 did. I will do some driving with the DWP set to 0 and see what the results are.
