Do's and don'ts of pulls, WOTs, and logs...
Hey, all. First of all, I'd like to express a ton of gratitude for all those that have contributed to these forums. I've referenced them again and again in recent months and hope to contribute back in some way along my N54 journey.

I bought a 2008 535xi about a year ago. Flash forward to five weeks ago and I had to replace the turbos. They were mostly covered under a warranty, so it wasn't too painful. A guy at work does a lot of tinkering with cars and turbos and such. We got to chatting, I got to Googling, and bam, I found n54tech.com and discovered a whole new world. My buddy recommended I start with a tune and a bigger intercooler, so I landed on the JB4 with the Bluetooth kit and got a VRSF 7.5" FMIC. Both have been installed and it feels like a whole new car. Problem is, now I've been bit by the bug. I want to learn and do more, bit by bit.

Again, this is all new to me, so forgive any mis-steps, obvious mistakes, etc. I just haven't done much of this stuff before. It was a miracle I got the FMIC installed. I've got a dual cone intake coming, and want to do the charge pipe and BOV, then a LPFP next so I can better handle some ethanol mixes. Thoughts on that order of mods?

Now on to my topic, finally. With the JB4, I'd like to learn how to really read and use it more effectively. There wasn't a manual in the box or anything, and the sheer amount of content, posts, etc. is a bit overwhelming. I'm hoping someone can provide some basics, and I mean real beginner stuff, and best practices for pulls, WOTs, and how to read logs to diagnose issues and improve performance.

I know it's likely not the most exciting topic for most if not all of you guys, but any tips, tricks, and advice is greatly appreciated. Same for things to avoid or absolutely not do. Anyway, thanks again for all that you've already contributed and added to my N54 journey. Anything else from here on out is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much in advance.



Propper logging:
3rd gear
2k rpm - redline
WOT (but don't activate the kick down switch)
shift into 4th
slow down, and end log

See logging for proper pulls/WOTs. Keep in mind you'll be going real fast by the end of it. If there is no track available, find long, straight, empty roads, or do highway pulls on straighter onramps. Another helpful thing is to prevent the downshift if driving an automatic. You can try to do this manually, or if you like to smash, get a downshift blocker.

Thanks, Mustoke. The Logging Parameters and their Meaning post was helpful. Playing with the logs and display settings is also helpful. Downloading a CSV to play with is fun too.

I've read most of that sticky thread a few times by now. Funny, I seem to catch different things each time, kind of like watching a move a second time one catches different things.

I don't have a convenient track nearby. The closest one is an hour away. Same for a dyno. So, I'm relying on highway pulls and the like, which are inconvenient and inconsistent.

I guess I'm also looking for what speeds, RPMs, gears, length of time, time before punching it and after, etc. a pull/WOT should be logged? Just best practices or ideal circumstances.

Knowing this I can find the right places to do them in my area and hopefully get some more consistent logs over periods of time measuring the effects of my mods and getting to know my car.

"safety for lean (2). both trims maxed right away (50) and both afr went very lean (16-18) then the switch to map 4 safety. boost was on target until safety. likely fuel related. fuel pressures seemed ok so you may need a pump back end flash. enable 6 cyl timing. log in 3rd gear, traction control inactive, 2000 rpm to redline. and post again. the jb4 can be set to auto log under wide open throttle so you don't have to stop and start the log. map 5 (auto tune) can be useful as you and the car get used to the tune and logs. keep trying and post back here for help and questions. we've all been where you are. the power is there. wait till you add ethanol...woooo!"

The above is what Dave from fuel-it sent me.

Most pertinent to you-
***enable 6 cyl timing.
***log in 3rd gear,
***traction control inactive,
***2000 rpm to redline.

Fourth gear pulls put you into the 100+mph zone. I made that mistake last time...
I have an auto with paddle shifters. I roll into it and put the car in third then bury the pedal to redline.

I'm on Map 5 for now. I'll check my settings next time I go for a ride.

The "enable 6 cyl timing" is new to me. Seems like I should set mine to 5 for IJE0S?

Pump gas bef will help as well. I was having minor issues with my 335i untill I got the bef. From what I have read if you have a jb4 and dont have a bef your car hates you. Overall driveability was way better after the bef. just dont forget to go to menu4 selection 2 after you do a bef. if you dont you will rack your brain trying to figure out why you keep going to map 4 haha. Bef flashing licence is 80 bucks. im dcis charge pipe and bov ********* ***. jb4 map2 with pump usa bef.

How does the BEF work? You license it, download it, and load it onto the JB4 somehow?

Do I need that MHD Wireless OBDII Wifi Flash Adapter to load the BEFs? It's another $70 and seems to be sold out everywhere.

Bug? What bug....bought this car a yr ago bone stock.

Everything you need is in the stickies. Go to the log support section ( top of page) for more detailed info on the parameter meaning of the log.

The BEF is the backend flash. ( in the stickies )

I was super lean before the BEF and got kicked right into map 4 every time.

You don't have to use the MHD flasher to do the BEF but it is easier that way. You can buy a KDcan(?) cable and flash it that way. You will need an android phone or tablet to download the BEF for either methold.

The BEF gets downloaded directly into the ECM not into the JB4 through the OBDII port.

Youtube n54 Backend flash before you try it.

There are several versions with using the cable. Find the newer ones using the MHD flasher.

BMW fanatic has a video with the cable which has a ton of useful ideas on how to do it that still apply to the MHD one.

Definitely have it on a battery charger while doing it. My battery is original and I tried to do using a trickle charger and it didn't work. My wipers went on, and stayed on, the first time. ( per the receipts from the PO, the battery is original )

I used a real charger the second time and the lights went on, and there was no way to turn them off, during the 18 minutes it took. The battery was draining faster than the charger could charge it.

I used a dcan cable with an adapter to go toy phone download the mhd flasher app place the jb4 in map0 connect a battery tender to your car because it take about 40 minutes to flash. Connect to car with the mdh flasher app select bef pick your dme then select your flash i did pump usa bef let it flash go to menu 4 select 2 and then pick map 2

Putting JB4 in Map 0 before you do anything is in the BMW Fanatic video. Good to point that out emphatically. I was able to do the BEF in 18 minutes doing it through the MHD flashing. it is faster than the cable.
*BTW the MHD flasher is WIFI, not bluetooth.
pump usa BEF is what I also used. I second that.

Probably should consider upgrading your charge pipe sooner rather than later. The increased boost will explode the stock plastic pipe at a very inopportune moment. Ask me how I know...

My charge pipe broke off pulling out of the Home Depot under mild boost. Luckily the retaining clip hooked on a wire. I found the o ring in street in front of my mailbox the day after the one I ordered from BMW came in.
Somehow it survived several WOT logging runs.

I am on stock diverters. To be fair, I only have about 1,000 miles on the car since the JB4 was installed.

Flashed my car last night. Thanks so much for all the tips. It was super easy and finished in just over 15 minutes. Car runs smoother now for sure.
