Default DIY "dyno glory" air intake - 01-08-2008, 10:34 PM

Hey guys,

I bought a dual cone air filter setup off another forum member a few weeks ago, and since it worked so well figured you might want to know how to make your own!

Buy two two K&N cone style filters, 3" opening, 5" long. Then buy two short 3"->2 1/4" (outside diameter) exhaust couplers. You should be able to get everything you need at Pep Boys!

You'll remove the factory air box, and attach the filters as shown.

*** EDIT ***
While the BMS filter kit is the ultimate blend of performance, sound, looks, and value, we appreciate that several of you would like to build your own intake. To make your life easier BMS now offers its intake couplers ala-cart. Machined from light weight aluminum and anodized black to match the engine bay, these intake couplers allow you to adapt 2.25"-2.5" cone filters of your choice. BMS suggests the K&N RU0640.

Couplers are priced at $26 + shipping. You can order them here: http://www.burgertuning.com/products.html
Filters as of the writing of this are $33 shipped each from Amazon.com. Order them here: http://www.amazon.com/K-RU-0640-Univ...2646694&sr=8-1

Grand total is around $98 shipped.

What do you mean by reliable? It's pretty loud at part throttle, but works OK.

Just a DIY. I have some intake ideas of my own so who knows what the future holds. But if you want to make good power this is the way to go. I hope to track test soon!

I think pep boys has filters for $24.99. So around $60 total.

You were not joking yesterday when you said you would post DIY for intake! You own ! Great job and thanks for the instructions. Im taking my car in tomm. Its going to be so easy taking off jb2h.. I love it compared to the hassle of vishnu wiring.. It sucks so bad and the pins arnt even snugg like your's for the wire connections..
I bought that dang K&N filter for nothing huh ? oh well

Kind of a pita, but not that bad. Once you've done it once it goes fast. The air intake OK for daily driving just a bit loud.

We need to get DPs on your car Brent!

It's also ugly, and there is that hot air concern. I drive around with my cowl off which I think helps airflow, but there is a reason we call it the "dyno glory" intake.

On the 3"x 2" stub adapters, try and get 3" x 2.250" as this will be closer to actual size of the turbo inlet tubes (1) and (2) . The oe inlets are actually just slightly larger than 2.250" ...the 2" will work but why give up .250" dia.(per bank) of air suction area ?
I first saw this DIY on a Canadian guys 335 (at that other place), and thought it quite unique !
If there is a need for the EXACT size adapter, I could set up to make a small run of 50 pieces at MSDS...just depends on the demand.

How about a big airbox for it, to draw air from the stock intake runners plus another tube going to where the VIP intake goes.

Sam you know you want to try the dyno glory intake... I think if nothing else this proves the factory intake is a restriction at higher HP levels, and provides justification for a nice aftermarket one.

Terry you mentioned a heat problem. Do you drive with this daily? Is the heatsoak noticable?

I do piggyback and intake installs, pm for info.

Just keep in mind that intake will heatsoak as soon as your engine bay gets hot. This intake makes good power for cool engines only, we've already tested this method and it heat soaks really bad, otherwise we'd offer it as a product.

You'll lose power once your motor heats up, take my word for it.

I'll have to make one. You take off the lid, filter, unclip a big vacuum line in the front, remove the snorkel (with 2 hex screws in the front), unscrew the lines going in to the box, and pull up the wiring harness grommets that are attached to the box. Then it just lifts up and out. It also helps to drip some oil on the 3 rubber pedestals that hold it to the intake manifold.

as far as the heat soak is concerned couldn't you just make a box to put around the filters and force cool air into it somehow?
