Default 535xi downpipe, is it worth it - 10-17-2012, 07:51 AM

I am want to know how much downpipes add in horsepower? Also how much more if I did downpipes + complete 3" exhaust? Also exactly why do some people get codes when they get a ******* downpipe? Just looking to see if it is worth at all to modify the downpipes or not.

20 horsepower and 30 torque is what I am reading for the N54 335s on BMS' website. Since the E60 535i is the same engine, you can roughly expect the same values to be carried over. Most people mention that the turbo lag disappears and is worth every penny.

Of course, your mileage may vary.

Unfortunately, the E60 N54 downpipes are rare gems and very pricey.

My butt dyno says they add more than 20 hp, but the engine revs much faster and power kicks in sooner in a more connected way. The lack of pedal resonsiveness we get is pretty much gone, so it feels like a very powerful non turbo car.
Whether it is worth it is up to each individual. When you consider the acquisition cost of the car, then perhaps shelling out $1,500 for a pair of DPs installed is reasonable. But that same $1,500 also buys us JB4 with DCI and meth, so tht's why I did those first. More bang for the buck.
I will add FMIC by next spring and that will be around $1,100 installed for a CP-e or Helix.
Then I am done unless my turbos blow and I send them to Rob Beck for reconditioning. :-)

^^ Wow. Any videos of FBO 535s? Most I've seen is DCI, JB4, and maybe an exhaust. Never DPs or Meth or FMIC.

There are several FBO 535s around. Xclone and Aoschadlin among others. I am just a little slow on the uptake, doing it the stealth way to avoid domestic disputes.
It's similar to the story of the frog in the glass of water, you slowly raise the temp until it is boiling, and the frog never notices.

What is fbo? I just can't justify spending $1000 on down pipes for 20hp. I can get at cat back 3" exhaust for less then that.

I'm FBO (DP's, FMIC, Meth, Exhaust, DV's, intake & cobb tuned). Was there a particular video you were looking for?

My car is getting new plugs tomorrow. That should be good for at least another 20whp

Once it's all back together I'll try and get a video of a run against my friends R8. It's a long drive to Mexico, so it could be a while.

man just go out and find a 5.0 and race him

My little brother has the new 5.0 and I need to see what I am up against, but thanks though man, how often do you recommend doing the plugs, mine is at 53k miles, was thinking of doing the plugs once I change the oil on it.

on top of that, what oil do you guys recommend for that mileage

Mobil One 0W 40.

I use NGK Laser Iridium plugs and gap them at .022".
Also replaced my coils, but the car has over 80k miles on it so they were a bit beat up and throwing misfires at WOT.

Was going to gap mine to 0.022" based on this.

http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showpo...1&postcount=68

Thought this was a better gap for those using E85 blends????

.06 would mean a larger than stock gap, makes no sense!

Thanks Ocean

I can feel the car getting sluggish and low acceleration, I think it is time for plugs and oil change.

How many quarts do you guys use with an oil filter of 0-w40.
