Default 1 billion mile car? - 10-16-2013, 10:48 PM

You've heard of cars that have run for a million miles... but does anyone think a car will ever reach 1 BILLION miles in the future? What about... a TRILLION miles? I'm talking conventional cars that run on the ground (either internal combustion or electric or some other type of propulsion). Not spaceships or aircraft.

I don't think we'll see a billion mile car, let alone a trillion mile car. If you were to drive at 100mph, you'd be driving for over 1100 years straight before you'd hit one billion miles. Just for perspective to space though, one billion miles is a pinprick in perspective, about .015% of one light year.

Just to put into perspective the difference between 1 million and 1 billion.

A million seconds is 12 days. A billion seconds is 31 years.

Sometimes we forget to appreciate the sheer magnitude of things when we're overwhelmed with all of those zeroes.

Good way to put it into perspective.
