Default Various B48 Implementations - What makes them Different - 09-13-2017, 10:12 AM

I have unsuccessfully searched for discussion on the differences between the different B48 engines. I believe the following versions exist:
  • 181 hp and 214 lb-ft torque version used in F30 330e and G30 520i
  • 181 hp and 240 lb-ft torque version used in G30 530e
  • 189 hp and 207 lb-ft torque version used in F56 Mini Cooper S, F22 220i, and F48 X1 20i.
  • 228 hp and 221 lb-ft torque version used in F56 Mini JCW Hardtop, F22 225i, and F48 X1 28i
  • 228 hp and 258 lb-ft torque version used in F56 Mini JCW Clubman
  • 248 hp and 258 lb-ft torque version used in F30 330i, G30 530i, and F22 230i
  • 255 hp and 258 lb-ft torque version used in G11 730i, and G11 730Li
  • 255 hp and 295 lb-ft torque version used in G11 740e
I would like to know what the actual differences are between these engines, and what can be done to unlock the additional power found in the B48 G11 (and then what can be done to make it even more powerful). I am guessing such discussions exist, but haven’t found it.

Tuning and exhaust. And I can't believe they're selling a 4 cylinder 7 series. So much for a luxury car. Luxury is about excess, not barely enough. I pity the pathetic idiots who spent money on those.

A few thoughts on this:
  • As a point of clarification, the above numbers for the 530e and 740e do not include the total power as generated by the engine plus motor, as including total output would be unhelpful when discussing the base engine output in different trims.
  • Luxury is defined differently by different people.
  • Even if you consider luxury through terms of power, you should be aware that the current G11 740e creates more power than the prior F01 730i, 740i, and more than its predecessor's E65 730i, 735i, 740i, 745i, 730d, and 740d, which include 6-cylinder NA, 6-cylinder turbo, 8-cylinder NA, and 6-cylinder diesel.
  • I disagree that the only difference is the tuning and exhaust, or we would have a lot of B48 cares making a lot more power.
  • I'm not really wanting to get into a conversation about anything other than the stated topic: what are the stock differences between these motors?

I'm telling you, the differences are tuning and exhaust. If you go through the parts ETK, they're exactly the same mechanically. They're all the B48B20B. The only different ones are the Mini's and X1s, as they're turned sideways and most of the time are B46s and not B48s. And the electrics use the B48B20A.

As far as the other stuff goes, we didn't get most of those cars in the US. We never got smaller than a V8 (modern era, no clue on classics) until the F01 740 with the N54.

Interesting, thanks. Seems like that means a JB4 tune for the G30 530e should put out more combined power than 322hp and 369 lb-ft of torque from a stock G11 740e, since they use the same exhaust components, have same motor attached, and I'm guessing JB4 can get more aggressive on fuel/ignition tables than BMW.

Just realized this should be in the B58 forum. I had posted in Mini forum b/c I saw vast majority of B48 posts here. Can a moderator move this over there?
