Talking Meth in my Elbow - 09-07-2017, 11:05 AM

Shop installed my water/meth system last week...I'm super excited.

In reading many posts on this site I got the impression that the nozzle is to be screwed directly into the chargepipe (to make the smallest droplets of water/meth).

However upon inspecting my system, a 90 degree elbow is screwed into the chargepipe. The nozzle is then attached to that elbow, with all of the appropriate compression fittings upstream. So essentially I'm making a fine mist at the nozzle tip, and within a 1/8 inch it's making a 90 degree turn headed for the CP. I worry that a good portion of the mist hits the side of the copper elbow and condenses into larger droplets (or drips) prior to CP. Is this the conventional install method?

While exploring this a bit last night, it didn't seem that the nozzle could actually screw directly into the CP as the threads didn't quite match up. Perhaps I'm missing something.

NOTE: I'm running dual CM10's into a ER CP. My meth kit was purchased from BMS

Any help is greatly appreciated!

You're 100% right, that is not set up correctly.

You definitely want the nozzles screwed into the charge pipe and the elbows off of them, not the other way around. The bungs in the charge pipe should be tapped to 1/8 NPT and the nozzle should screw directly into that. Can you upload a pic of the setup?

Dual CM10's on Factory Turbo's is overkill. you only need a single CM10 for factory or dual CM5

Thank's for your response. Glad to know my initial "gut reaction" was correct. I'll post pictures tonight for a laugh, then switch out the geometry.

Your comment about dual CM10's being overkill is exactly what my tuner said. Fortunately I had one of the CM10's clog and therefore only one was working. When I install the nozzle correctly, I'll only run a single CM10.

However I don't want in any way malign the shop that suggest dual CM10's.
They are extremely talented guys!!! They largely work on cars with upgraded turbos (Pure Stage 2 or MMP Stage 3). Since my turbos are acting sickly, we live at altitude (5000 ft), and it's been a very hot summer, they likely just assumed we'd upgrade those turbos soon and built the meth system for the future.

Since they have been so awesome to work with in all other regards, I'm willing to simply call the reversed nozzel/elbow a "brain fart", and continue on happily.

I appreciate your comment!

Here are those pics, silver is the CM10. Clearly installed wrong.

Well that was just dumb of them. The point of the nozzle is to atomize the liquid into the air stream. I bet as soon as it leaves that nozzle it re-condenses and at least partly just drips down your chargepipe.

I know, crazy huh! I reinstalled correctly and was able to get much better cooling (IATs).

ridiculous - would avoid any shop that would install it that way. It's not a small thing - had you not noticed it, it's very possible you could have blown an engine through poor meth distribution.

Agreed. This was just a clear case of someone not knowing what they were doing at all. If they have other cars/customers with this setup, they need to actively go find them and fix it before they cause some damage.

Great point, I'll speak to the owner about ensuring this proactive nozzle inspection happens.
