Default Time for new brakes, opinion? - 03-22-2012, 07:23 AM

I've read a lot of threads but I can't decide what to buy.

Ideally I would like something better than stock. The car will be pushing close to 400whp so I should also improve the braking.
I like the look of cross-drilled/slotted rotors but I know it makes them more fragile. The rust will also appear in the holes and slots.
I hate rust.
I don't track the car, no need to go crazy.

From what I've read
Pads: Cool carbon, stoptech street performance, hawk hps, ebc redstuff.
Rotors: R1concepts, stoptech, plenty of them...
I also like the EBC Ultimax (dash slotted). They look good and are certainly performing well though a bit pricey.

What do you guys think/recommend?

I haven't taken the jump yet, but my local performance shop is recommending StopTech slotted rotors (stay away from drilled) with some Hawk brake pads (just stay away from ceramic unless you want the noise ).

Not a definitive answer, but 2c from the guys that I trust with my car.

I just replaced/upgraded my front brakes and rotors. I went with Akebono pads front and rear, turned the stock rear rotors, and went with Z4 35is rotors on the front. I could not be happier with the combo. Very smooth and no fade, best of all, virtually NO brake dust whatsoever. Good luck.

I have been doing some research on the subject and I think the Z4 rotors are a really good compromise, aluminum hat lowers rotor weight by 3lbs per rotor compared stock. No rust on the rotor and less weight. Around $300 for the set, and it wont hurt warranty if you still have some. Next best thing is RB rotors for $900 or jump to big brake kits.

So the Z4 SDrive35is rotors are the same dimensions but lighter? And no RUST?? I know what I'm getting! No benefit in the non-"s" Z4 rotors?

Yes, and I did quite a bit of research on the subject, didnt find anything on the non "s". But you better do you own search to verify on the actual weight savings if that is importatnt to you.....

I am going to upgrade my rotors after my next track session, mine are still in decent shape. I decided to upgrade the M3 front control arm bushings, Koni dampers and added Dinan camber plates for now.

The less weight, especially unsprung, the better....on non-drive wheels at least.
